Summer of Flowers...
As we were driving up the Parks Highway to Fairbanks last weekend, we stopped at Willow Creek Resort and noticed how huge the begonias were growing. Again, in Nenana, at Monderosa Grill, there were extraordinary hanging baskets. That's when we took out our cameras -- and captured the gorgeous flowers at the Nenana Visitor Center, and the distinctive, Southern-style hanging baskets so common around historic Fairbanks.
Actually, we could call this "The Summer of Fireweed." We've never seen fireweed looking so beautiful. In the Susitna Valley, we saw fireweed well over 8 feet tall. This July, the right-of-way under the electric lines has turned into huge paths of purple fireweed.
August of Berries...
Flowers are followed by fruit. All indications are that this will be a great year for berry picking. And that this will be "The August of Wild Berries."
